Over 180 Animals Rescued from Horrific Conditions in Portage County

In a heartbreaking turn of events, more than 180 animals have been rescued from deplorable living conditions in Portage County. The Portage Animal Protective League (APL) undertook a massive rescue operation on Wednesday, uncovering animals living in unimaginable filth and neglect.

Among the rescued animals are horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, turtles, parrots, rabbits, cats, dogs, and many more. The sheer scope of the rescue highlights the severity of the situation these animals were enduring.

Kelly Kennedy, a dedicated animal advocate, visited Whispering Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary in Medina County, one of the sanctuaries now caring for some of the rescued animals. She reported that the animals arrived at the sanctuary in dire conditions—dehydrated, malnourished, and barely clinging to life. Kennedy emphasized the heartbreaking nature of the rescue, noting that the animals and their owners were at their lowest points.

The team at Whispering Acres is now working tirelessly to nurse the animals back to health. They have implemented a refeeding program for the severely malnourished horses, which are thin and weak. Similarly, the goats are being treated for hoof rot and parasite infestations. Despite their efforts, the road to recovery will be long and arduous, with the owner of Whispering Acres estimating that it could take at least three months for many of the animals to recover fully. For those in the worst shape, the recovery period might extend even longer.

Tragically, some of the turtles rescued did not survive, underscoring the critical condition in which many of the animals were found. Whispering Acres took in four goats, two horses, and two sheep from the rescue. The staff is hopeful but cautious, understanding the fragile state of their new residents.

The rescue operation also revealed disturbing details about the conditions these animals were subjected to. None of the animals had access to food or water and were living in squalor. Some were so desperate for nourishment that they resorted to eating the bark off trees.

The Portage APL, along with sanctuaries like Whispering Acres, is committed to giving these animals a second chance at life. The dedication and hard work of these organizations are vital in ensuring the animals’ survival and eventual recovery. Despite the sadness and tragedy, there is a glimmer of hope as these animals receive the care and love they desperately need.

This rescue serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the ongoing need for vigilance and intervention in cases of neglect and abuse. The story of these 180 animals is a testament to the resilience of life and the impact that compassionate care can have on those who are most vulnerable.
